HOW I HEALED MYSELF THROUGH REAL FOOD
Growing up in India, I ate a lot of traditional Indian vegetarian food like Lentils, curries, roti, lots of local fruits and vegetables. Both my mom and grandmother are amazing cooks and we rarely ate out. My occasional indulgence was ‘Chaat’ (Indian Street Food) that I was allowed to have only once in a while.
I moved to the United States soon after getting married and we managed to settle in New Jersey in the peak of winter. Although I cooked dinner at home, my mornings were often rushed and like many others I resorted to sugar loaded cereals for breakfast, frozen/packaged food for lunch and cookies and chocolate for dessert.
Coming from a tropical country, I then found myself leading a more sedentary lifestyle due to the cold weather. Being away from my family and experiencing the gloomier climate, I allowed myself to be comforted by all the wrong foods which took a toll on my health. My hormones were completely out of whack, I was constantly moody and irritable, had acne all over my face and I had gained about 30 lbs.
I was put on medications that made me feel worse than I already did. I was frustrated and helpless. I decided to pack my bags and go to India to visit my family and when I came back, I had made my decision – I was going to get better WITHOUT the use of any medications or prescription drugs.
I researched on how to eat right and balance my hormones through food. I started doing yoga and other exercises. I’m going to be honest with you, it was not easy and I did wish I had someone to keep me motivated and accountable during this arduous journey. After about 6 months or so, I lost all the extra weight I had gained. My hormones were back to normal, my acne cleared up and I felt amazing! My journey did not stop here, it has become a lifestyle change that my family and I have embraced forever.
This is what pushed me into exploring my options in the field of Nutrition. I received my Health Coaching training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, New York. My degree in Microbiology helps me get a better understanding of the genetic history of a person. Health Coaching is my life’s passion and purpose.
I have loved every moment of this transformational journey! I strongly believe our body has the ability to heal itself, provided we give it the nourishment it requires. When our mind, body and spirit work together, we can achieve vibrant health, vitality and happiness.
